Difference between agonist and antagonist
Agonist and Antagonist are one of the most important parts of the human body as well as in Pharmacology. Agonist and Antagonist work opposite directions with each other. When Agonist in a direction then Antagonist works exactly its opposite directions. It is the main difference Agonist vs Antagonist.
Agonist and Antagonist are very much responsible for producing specific movements. If Agonist works with the muscles then antagonist is working against muscles. If Agonist works when muscles relaxing and Antagonist will work contract muscles. For this why they are also called “Prime Movers”.
Mainly Agonist is a substance which combines with the cell receptor which produces some reaction and this cause because of those substances. And on the other end, Antagonist is a chemical which mainly opposes or reduces the actions of Agonist.
In medical Science, if a patient having drugs then Agonist will work with the receptor site and causes a response of the drug where Antagonist will work against Agonist to block the responses of the drug. While Agonist will work stimulate action for this Antagonist will sit idle and doing nothing.
The agonist is also kind of chemical or reaction which helps to bind the function of the activity of receptors. And the other hand, Antagonist will help to binding receptors. Sometimes Agonist combines some chemicals and promotes some actions. On the other hand, Antagonist after combining with chemicals only interface its actions.
The word Agonist comes from a Latin word called “Agnista” which means “contender” where Antagonist comes from the Greek word called “Antagonistes” which means “Competitor or rival”.
